Our world is spiraling out of control. We read about it everyday: extreme weather, fires, natural disasters, disease, outrageous crimes, people attacking each other, rioting, wars… I remember when I first read the book of Revelation and got to the part where it talks about all the things that will come upon the earth in the last days. What struck me most was that, no matter how horrible these things were, people persistently refused to turn to God and repent of their sin. Instead they blasphemed and cursed Him for the things that were happening. I’ve always found this odd and had a difficult time imagining it. But I realize now that this was only because I was looking at it through the lens of how things were at the time I was reading the book. Fast forward to today and I see it happening full speed ahead. Just as the Bible foretold.

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.”

Romans 1:28-32

As our world plummets into chaos on every level, humanity is continually struggling to find some humanistic way of dealing with our problems. And while essentially cursing a God who would allow these things to happen, they also deny or dismiss the possibility that He even exists. Much less recognize that He is using these things to draw them to Himself before it’s too late. Outside of their reproach and denial, God isn’t even a sliver of thought in the recess of their minds. But the time will come, and has already come for some, when they will no longer be able to receive the truth, and will perish.

As we begin to see the Day of the Lord coming near, it’s tempting to stick our heads in the sand and pray for Jesus’ return. But, this is not what God’s Word instructs us to do. In fact, God tells us plainly in the book of Jude:

“But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they were saying to you, ‘In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.’ These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit.

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.

And have mercy on some, who are doubting; save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.”

Jude 1:17-23
