“Do not become partners with those who do not believe, for what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship does light have with darkness? And what agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what does a believer share in common with an unbeliever? And what mutual agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, just as God said, ‘I will live in them and will walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore ‘come out from their midst, and be separate,’ says the Lord, ‘and touch no unclean thing, and I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters,’ says the All-Powerful Lord.” ~2 Corinthians 6:14-18

We’ve all heard this scripture before, or at least part of it. And usually it goes something like this: “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers”. We generally hear it in terms of business dealings, friendships, marriage and other close relationships. But have you ever considered that God may have meant this in a more broad sense? To include something a little more.. ideological?

Recently I’ve been having conversations with my mother-in-law about the current political scene in the United States. Over the years I’ve watched her morph from a devoted Republican to an extreme left Democrat. As we were discussing the impeachment trial of President Trump, the current state of our country, and the candidates running for the Presidency a thought dropped into my mind: A vote for any politician is a vote for everything on which the party stands.

To be honest, I’ve never been one to vote strictly party line, but as I pondered the truth of this thought I realized that gone are the days in which politicians might stand on their own morals and ethics. As I considered the gravity of my as of yet future vote, I shared this thought with my Mother-in-law and her answer surprised me. She actually stopped and became very thoughtful, then said, “I thought about that too.. and there are big issues I don’t agree with the Democratic party on. But I just figure God will sort it all out in the end.” What I didn’t say then, but intend to say in our next conversation is: “Yes, He will sort all things out in the end.. but He does this through judgment. Is that really the side you wanna land on?”

This article is not about politics or the upcoming elections

It is not my intention to meddle in your decisions about politics. My motto is: Preach the Word, Live your Convictions. That said, I think it’s important for all of us to consider what it means when we cast our vote in support of the candidates and issues facing us today. And not just at the polls. My motives here are only meant as a reminder of how important it is to prayerfully consider the ramifications of who and what we support on a daily basis; political or otherwise.

As Christians, our firm allegiance should always be to Christ and His Word, above and beyond all other things in this life. But is this what we see in the Church today? No, it is not. The Church is divided over many things. Not the least of which is who we will vote for and what social issues we choose to reject, support, or endorse. This is nothing new. The Christians in Paul’s day also struggled to maintain their singularly focused devotion to Christ:

“I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree together, to end your divisions, and to be united by the same mind and purpose. For members of Chloe’s household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters, that there are quarrels among you. Now I mean this, that each of you is saying, “I am with Paul,” or “I am with Apollos,” or “I am with Cephas,” or “I am with Christ.” Is Christ divided? Paul wasn’t crucified for you, was he?”  ~1 Corinthians 1:10-13

A House Divided

There are those who believe they can partition their christian life from their day to day life — as if these two could ever be disjoined. But they have not considered the duplicitous and self-destructive nature of that mindset. To even attempt this says more about the man or woman themselves than anything else they could say or do. Jesus addressed this notion with the Pharisees:

“Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed, and no town or house divided against itself will stand.” “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is known by its fruit.” ~Matthew 12: 25, 30, 33

When we set aside the law that God has written upon our hearts and minds (Romans 8:10, Jeremiah 31:33) and side with the world, we are unwittingly setting ourselves against Christ and inviting His discipline into our lives. Or do you think you can throw your hat in the ring, so to speak, for things expressly condemned within the pages of His Word and escape His judgment?

Please don’t think that I am presuming to judge; I am in no position to judge anyone. I too am a frail human being who has made many mistakes throughout my life and will most likely continue to make many more until He takes me home. My intent is only to warn those who have not considered the grave consequences of such choices — and to exhort all (myself included) to turn to Christ with your whole heart — because I love the body of Christ and I don’t want to see anyone destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6).

Come Out From Their Midst

As we witness the acceleration of wickedness and godless digression within our country and world, let’s set our faces like flint toward Christ and determine to follow Him above all else. Let’s stand firm in Him and commit ourselves only to those things that please Him; not wavering or acquiescing in the face of pressure and persecution from the world. And let us come out from their midst and be separate. No longer allowing ourselves to be conformed to this present world, but instead being transformed by the renewing of our minds, so that we may test and approve what is the will of God–what is good and well-pleasing and perfect, (Romans 12:2).
