“What is in the well of the heart will come up through the bucket of the mouth.”
-J. Vernon McGee
(June 17, 1904 – December 1, 1988)
About Dr. J. Vernon McGee
John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, “When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!” His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.
After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee’s greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.
He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee‘s unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.
On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.

From Australia and at the traffic lights one night (10 years ago) a voice said ‘blue letter bible’ and I was lead to Vernon Mc Gee. I thank God for that leading it expanded His Word to me. Love what that man stood for – honesty, truth, humbleness. He was the father I would have loved.
Similarly 2019 returned from a trip to Israel & Turkey and was crying out to the Lord – ‘why will people turn away from you?’ I was then lead to Jacob Prasch which taught me more about apostasy. Our God is wonderful.

Hello Barb. Yes, He is wonderful! I’m so glad to hear how He led you and taught you. I discovered J Vernon McGee as a young Christian and loved his teaching immediately. I’m very familiar with Jacob Prasch also and actually have some of his teaching on my site. It’s a sad thing we’re seeing today in and outside the Church, but especially especially inside the Church. But seeing this should also booster our faith in His word as we see what He’s written come to pass, because we can have confidence that the rest will follow. Blessings to you, dear sister. Thanks for stopping by!

Dee, if you only knew just how much I loved the heart and soul of J Vernon McGee. His scratchy voice was penetrating to me. When I learned of his death I was weak in the knees. This was a sign to me to pray for his spirit…and I did just that. I asked God to do me like he had done J Vernon. Implant J’s teaching spirit into me. I sincerely believe that my prayer was answered. I shall never forget J and his wise words of wisdom. May he rest in peace. Amen.

The first time I heard him on the radio his words sank deep into my heart. Strong, true, and faithful ministers are sorely lacking these days, so I tend to gravitate to the tried and true of yester-year. Though I do have my favorite ministers of today too.. like YOU! I pray God will answer your prayer to me also and give me the spirit to teach the truth strongly and boldly. Blessings to you, dear Sister.
